Sat 13 - Sun 14 August 2022 - A 2-Day Practical Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION

When confronted with horses affected by cardiac abnormalities many equine practitioners are intimidated and shy away from a cardiologic work-up.  This practically-oriented course is intended to help general equine practitioners identify common equine heart diseases and their impact on performance, safety and life expectancy.  Attendees will learn how to perform a thorough physical exam of the cardiovascular system and will be taught how to acquire and interpret a routine echocardiogram and ECG, crucial skills for equine practitioners to provide heart assessments in horses.  The expertise and extensive experience of the team of internationally renowned equine cardiologists, along with a relaxed atmosphere will encourage open and honest discussions and stimulate attendees to assimilate knowledge.

The 7 hours of hands-on auscultation, ECG and echocardiography wetlabs will be held in small groups and a further 2 hours will be devoted to case discussions.  At the beginning of the course attendees will furthermore be provided a few cases to work through which will then be discussed at the end of the course.  The following topics will be covered in well-illustrated lectures and case discussions:

  • Cardiac Auscultation – Murmurs & Arrhythmias
  • The Foundations of Equine Echocardiography
  • The Essentials of Doppler Echocardiography
  • Electrocardiography – indications, principles, and interpretation
  • Arrhythmias – relevance and treatment
  • Collapse and sudden cardiac death
  • Interpretation of cardiac findings – impact on performance, safety and life expectancy
  • Case discussions – arrhythmias, regurgitations, shunts, etc.

The 7 hours of wetlab sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to further develop their echocardiography and ECG skills in small groups (max 4-6 attendees per instructor) on live horses with heart conditions, all under the supervision of the specialists. Each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Auscultation of horses with heart conditions
  • Echocardiography of 5 horses with cardiac abnormalities in small groups (max. of 4-6 attendees per instructor)
  • Acquisition and interpretation of resting and exercising ECG

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance, and a Wine & Cheese reception at the end of the first day.   Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  On the evening of the first day, following the Wine & Cheese Reception, attendees are invited to join the speakers for an informal dinner (not included in the registration fee).  Early course registration is recommended as there are only limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Application will be made to AVA VetEd for CPD points accreditation.

Jenni graduated from Murdoch University then completed an internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala in Florida, before undertaking residency training in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, becoming a Diplomate of the American College Veterinary Internal Medicine on completion. She then returned to Australia to pursue a PhD at the University of Melbourne before joining the University of Melbourne’s Equine Centre as a specialist in equine medicine. Jenni maintains a keen interest in cardiology and developed the transvenous electrocardioversion service at the Equine Centre.

Laura is a registered specialist in equine medicine and also has further qualifications in equine stud medicine. She graduated with honours from the University of Sydney in 2003. Thereafter she undertook an internship and remained at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital as an assistant to Dr Angus McKinnon for several years, gaining a certificate in Equine Stud Medicine from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK in 2007. Laura completed a residency in Equine Medicine with Dr Kate Savage and Dr Sally Church at the University of Melbourne. Through this she gained a masters degree after researching cardiac disease and gained fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in equine medicine in 2010. Laura has also worked in racetrack practice at Flemington Equine Clinic. Overseas, she has been at the Clyde Veterinary Group in Scotland and was last year working at Rossdales and Partners in Newmarket, England.

Laura continues to enjoy helping with a broad range of cases including cardiac and respiratory disease, neurology, colic and diarrhoea, weight loss, endocrine diseases such as Cushings (PPID) and foal disorders.

Niamh graduated from University College Dublin in the year of 2001.

Following a surgical internship at University College Dublin, she undertook a year in equine stud practice in Southwest Ireland. Niamh then undertook a Residency in Equine Internal Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. During her residency, she was awarded a Master of Science with distinction for research into equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. Niamh was part of the equine medicine service at Rossdales Equine Hospital, Newmarket for two foal seasons before joining the team at Scone Equine Hospital’s Clovelly Intensive Care Unit in July 2008.

Niamh became a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine in 2011 and the Superintendent of the Scone Equine Hospital ICU in 2015. Niamh’s clinical interests include neonatology, critical care and cardiology. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and veterinary textbooks on a variety of equine medicine and surgery topics and been awarded a number of prizes for her research and publications, including the EVA Peter Irwin Literary Award in 2012 and the EVA Equine Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Award in 2014.

Sam graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Bristol in 1995 and after several years in mixed practice, returned to Bristol to complete a PhD relating to dynamic upper airway obstructions in equine athletes. Sam subsequently ran the Equine Sports Medicine Referral Service at the University of Bristol for 11 years before moving to the University of Adelaide in 2010.

Sam's clinical and research interests relate to poor performance in equine athletes, with a particular interest in cardiorespiratory disorders.  She is renowned internationally for her work relating to dynamic upper airway obstructions in horses and has published widely in this field. Whilst in the UK, Sam was instrumental in the development of the world's first overground endoscope, with the aid of funding from the Horserace Betting Levy Board. This technique has revolutionised the diagnosis of dynamic upper airway collapse in horses by enabling animals to be examined during exercise under normal riding conditions.

Sam is board certified in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation and is a member of the International Committee on Equine Exercise Physiology. She is the national committee chair for the 2018 conference which will be held in Australia.

Dr. Virginia Reef, a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed a rotating internship in large animal medicine and surgery, and a residency in large animal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Reef subsequently became the Director of the Large Animal Cardiology and Ultrasound Service.  Shortly thereafter she was instrumental in establishing the Section of Sports Medicine and Imaging at New Bolton Center and has been the Chief of that Section for the past 18 years. Dr. Reef has worked on the faculty at Penn for the past 27 years, advancing through the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor. She has trained the majority of academics focusing on equine cardiology and ultrasonography in the United States, as well as many individuals in private practice and overseas. Based on her many accomplishments, Dr. Reef was granted a prestigious endowed chair at Penn and currently serves as the Mark Whittier and Lila Griswold Allam Professor of Medicine. She is one of the charter diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a large animal associate member of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In addition to numerous original publications, she is the author and editor of a standard textbook on equine diagnostic imaging, “Equine Diagnostic Ultrasound.”
