COURSE DESCRIPTION

This practical course is suitable for veterinarians from mixed and equine practice who are keen to develop and update their knowledge and especially their practical skills on medical ultrasound of the following anatomic region: Abdomen – GI & non-GI organs (percutaneously & transrectally), thorax, eye, jugular vein etc..  The use of ultrasound for pleural drainage, for collecting biopsy samples and when working up foals will also be discussed.

To participate in the On-Location Portion, attendees are required to have first taken part in the  corresponding online Lecture Series ‘Abdominal, Thoracic & Soft Tissue Ultrasound’:

  • Live-streams are held between the 8th of June and 6th of July (6AM - 8AM AEST). Afterwards the lectures are available as on-demand recordings.

The Online Lecture Series addresses the following hot topics via well-illustrated, case-discussions providing a platform for the panel of speakers to share pitfalls, erroneous clinical conclusions and useful tips and tricks:

  • Gastrointestinal Ultrasound incl. fast localised exam in horses with colic
  • Ultrasound of non-GI Abdominal Organs
  • Ultrasound-guided Biopsy Techniques
  • Non-Cardiac Thoracic Ultrasound (incl. Pleural Drainage)
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • Ultrasound Exam of the Foal
  • Miscellaneous Medical Ultrasound – Thrombophlebitis, choke, transrectal ultrasound etc.

Open and frank discussions are encouraged during the course and the speakers will share their personal experiences with attendees, be it successes or failures.

Day 1 starts at 15:00h with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q&A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists.  This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine & Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.

On the second day, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course:

  • Fast localised abdominal ultrasound in horses with colic
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • The complete Abdominal Ultrasound Exam & Biopsy Techniques
  • Thoracic Ultrasound
  • Soft Tissue & Head/Neck Ultrasound

The course fee includes, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, lunch at a restaurant and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Case-Discussions & Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first taken part in the Lecture Series (included in the price).  Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Dr. Virginia Reef, a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed a rotating internship in large animal medicine and surgery, and a residency in large animal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Reef subsequently became the Director of the Large Animal Cardiology and Ultrasound Service.  Shortly thereafter she was instrumental in establishing the Section of Sports Medicine and Imaging at New Bolton Center and has been the Chief of that Section for the past 18 years. Dr. Reef has worked on the faculty at Penn for the past 27 years, advancing through the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor. She has trained the majority of academics focusing on equine cardiology and ultrasonography in the United States, as well as many individuals in private practice and overseas. Based on her many accomplishments, Dr. Reef was granted a prestigious endowed chair at Penn and currently serves as the Mark Whittier and Lila Griswold Allam Professor of Medicine. She is one of the charter diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a large animal associate member of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In addition to numerous original publications, she is the author and editor of a standard textbook on equine diagnostic imaging, “Equine Diagnostic Ultrasound.”

Andy graduated from Bristol in 1988 and after two years in mixed practice started in ambulatory equine practice in the Midlands. He gained the RCVS CertEP in 1993 before moving to Liphook Equine Hospital in 1994, becoming a partner in 2001. This was followed by the RCVS diploma in equine internal medicine in 2003 and European diploma in equine internal medicine in 2004. Andy has continued to perform a little first opinion ambulatory work although he now mainly works in the new hospital at Liphook with medical in-patients and the diagnostic laboratory. He has recently been appointed as visiting professor at the University of Surrey, Guildford and is involved in the development of a new veterinary school there. Andy’s main professional interests are in endocrine disease, liver disease, dermatology, infectious diseases and most other aspects of internal medicine.

Tom qualified from Cambridge University's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. He performed his PhD, also at Cambridge, on 'Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy in the Mare' under the supervision of Professor W.R.
